Box Score WICHITA - Men's basketball hosted the York Panthers on Saturday afternoon in their last non-conference matchup of the year. Latik Murphy's 29 points and a game winner from Stevie Strong combined to give Newman the win in their final non-conference matchup of the 2022-23 season.
Murphy lifted the Jets offense in the first half, going off for 11 and hitting three strait shots to make sure Newman kept ahold of their lead. The first year Jet shot 5-7 in the first half.
Despite a close first half with York only trailing by five after 20 minutes, no Panther player would reach double digits. The Panthers' Dwight Glover and Trevon Dennis both led with six each going into the final half.
The last half of the game would remain a close contest, with the Jets putting on some nice scoring runs but being unable to pull away from York.
Latik Murphy continued his hot shooting streak with another sequence of back to back scoring forcing York into taking a timeout. The timeout would do nothing to cool Murphy off however, as he hit another three after play restarted.
The game would come down to the wire as Newman lead 84-83 with just under a minute to go. Dwight Glover would make another appearance on the scoresheet, dropping in a layup to take the lead, giving the Jets just five seconds left in the game to respond. Stevie Strong would step up and do just that, taking the ball out of the timeout and finishing with a floater on the baseline, giving Newman the win.
Latik Murphy led the Jets in scoring with 29 on 68.8% shooting. He also shot 5-9 from three.
Stevie Strong scored 18 to go along with his game winner, and also led the team with three steals. He shared the most rebounds with Triston Turner and Isaac Aguiar, grabbing six.
Thomas Zevgaras managed an efficient 15 points on 7-13 shooting as well.
The Jets return to action on December 1st, going on the road to Jefferson City Missouri to start their MIAA Conference play against Lincoln at 7:30 PM.
