WICHITA – The Newman University Men's Basketball team has announced their 2022-23 schedule. The 2022-23 schedule consists of 14 home games to go along with 2 road exhibitions against D1 opponents and the MIAA/GAC Challenge in Claremore, Oklahoma. Head Coach RJ Allen enters his sixth season as head coach for the Jets in 2022-23. Kyle McLeroy enters his second season as assistant coach.
The Jets will start their 2022-23 campaign in back to back exhibition games on the road against Wichita State on Wednesday, November 2nd before heading to Springfield, Missouri to take on MVC member Missouri State on Saturday, November 5th.
The regular season will officially open in Claremore, Oklahoma on Friday, November 11th in the MIAA/GAC Challenge as the Jets will face familiar foes Concordia St. Paul and Southwest Minnesota State and look to avenge losses from last year's MIAA/GAC Challenge where the Jets were on the losing end against both teams.
The official home opener for the Jets will be Wednesday, November 16th when they take on Sterling College. NU defeated the Warriors 82-57 last season. Newman has 4 straight wins against Sterling dating back to 2007-08.
Newman will then travel to Dallas Baptist the following Saturday, November 19 before wrapping up their non conference schedule with 2 home games the week of the 22nd-26th against Tabor and York (NE) before beginning MIAA play.
The Jets open up MIAA play on the road in Jefferson City, Missouri to take on Lincoln before heading to Warrensburg, Missouri to take on a team that qualified for the MIAA tournament last season in UCM before losing to the eventual NCAA Champions Northwest Missouri in the first round of the MIAA tournament.
Pittsburg State will visit Fugate Gymnasium on Wednesday, December 7th for the Jets MIAA home opener before they face Missouri Southern on Saturday, December 10th. The Gorillas will look for revenge after the Jets defeated them on Senior Day last season 73-63.
The Jets are on the road before their Christmas break starts with 2 conference matchups in 3 days against Nebraska Kearney and Fort Hays State. They'll end the 2022 year with a home game against Emporia State on New Years Eve. Newman will try and erase a 7 game losing streak against the Hornets.
Rogers State was the final team to qualify for the MIAA Tournament last season and defeated the Jets in regular season play in both games with scores of 72-85 and 53-61. Newman will look to start the 2023 year off right and end a 7 game losing streak against the Hillcats on Thursday, January 5th in a road matchup in Claremore.
The Jets will finish the 2nd half of their season with 8 of their final 14 games at home. Missouri Western, Northwest Missouri State, Fort Hays, Nebraska Kearney, Washburn, Northeastern State, Rogers State, and Central Oklahoma will visit Wichita in 2023.
Newman's longest home stretch of the season will come in the New Year as they're home on February 2nd, 4th, and 8th before heading back on the road to Emporia State. NU will then finish the season with 3 of their final 4 games at home and will look to qualify for the conference tournament for the first time since the 2018-2019 season when they were members of the Heartland Conference.
