DALLAS, TX. - Men's Bowling opened their season this past weekend to compete in the Southwest Intercollegiate Bowling Conference events number I and II. The Varsity men came back to campus with two 2
nd place finishes to start the 21
st season of Newman Bowling.
SWIBC I consisted of 5 team games and 12 baker games to decide the title. The Jets could never really get any momentum going and would finish in 2
nd place to Oklahoma Christian University. The Jets were be led by Senior James McIver who averaged 233.4 and finished in 2
nd place in the tournament's individual standings just ahead of teammates
Zach Smullen (So.) averaging 233.4 and
Noah Akiona (So.) averaging 224.2. All three Jets would be named to the All-Tournament Team.
SWIBC II saw the Jets remaining close to the top throughout competition. Going into the final game of the day the Jets trailed first place by 136 pins. The Jets shot 1077 in the final game of competition but Oklahoma Christian shot 1060 to stop the charge. The Jets fell short and finished the SWIBC II event in 2
nd place.
The Jets were led by Freshman
Noah Raleigh-Turner who averaged 214.1 and finished in 8
th place in his first collegiate event. Noah was followed by
Silas Limes (Jr.) averaging 213.4,
Zach Smullen (So.) averaging 211.7 and
Noah Akiona (So.) averaging 210.1 who finished in 9th-11th place.
"It was a good start to the season overall," said Coach Murphy, "we learned a lot about ourselves and what we need to do to get better as we prepare for the next event."
The Jets will host the Midstates Championship this weekend Oct. 21-22 in their only home appearance.
