WICHITA – Baseball won their midweek series against Fort Hays State with a 14-4 victory on Tuesday afternoon.
The Jets got on the board first with a Zach Stewart double that brought
Jenner Steele and Jake Aneglico home. Stewart would then add another run off of a
Dalton Smith single. The Jets would score an additional two runs in the bottom of the second to take the Jets to a 5-0 lead.
The Tigers would attempt to get back in the game in the top of the third when they scored a run, but
Jack Kiser would score off of an error by the pitcher in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead back to five. Jase Schnieder would also score a run in the fourth after
Dalton Smith had yet another hit.
Fort Hays would score one run in the fifth, but a strong inning from the Jets in the sixth put the game far out of reach as they would add 4 runs to put the lead at 11-2. The Jets would eventually secure the run rule victory after
Jenner Steele and
Blake Mitchell were both walked with the basses loaded in the bottom of the eighth, with the final score of 14-4.
Colby Wilson won his first game of the season with five innings of work while striking out two batters and only walking two.
Ian Lecki came in relief for Wilson and struck out 2 batters in 2 innings.
The win gives the Jets a series win over the Tigers for the second time in as many seasons and move to 9 and 7 all time vs the Tigers. The win also gives NU a 4 game win streak over FHSU.
Newman will finish up the weekday series in a few weeks time in Hays.
The Jets will then host 8 straight games, including this weekends series against the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats. First pitch is scheduled for 3 PM on Friday.
