Box Score WICHITA - Newman Baseball began their conference slate on Friday afternoon, taking on Rogers State for the first MIAA series at McCarthy Field this season. Both teams took multiple run leads in the game, but neither could hold an advantage until the eleventh inning.
The Jets had gone to extra innings against Southwestern College on Tuesday, and were looking to win back to back games for the first time this season.
Once again, first baseman
Trent Trammell made his mark in the game, with his single helping score the first run of the game. Trammell would have three more hits in the game, coming up in clutch situations later in the game.
Pitcher Cole Langraf had an impressive start to the game, going through two innings with three strikeouts and no hits.
The Hillcats would tie the game in the third, but an explosion of Jets offense would follow in the next several innings.
A
Blake Mitchell single in the third inning allowed Newman to retake the lead, with two more runs from
Jason Schneider and
Garrett Arnold giving Newman the first firm advantage in the contest.
Scoring on several miscues by the Jets in the seventh, the Hillcats held a three run lead in the seventh.
After getting a run back in the bottom of the seventh, Newman tied the game off of a
Blake Mitchell double, which allowed
Joe Kinneberg and
Trent Trammell to score.
Relief pitcher
Jared Newton took care of business in the tenth inning, giving the Jets a chance to take the game.
Unable to score in the tenth, the Jets left two runners on base.
In a controversial play, Rogers State took the lead on a triple that was not ruled a ground rule double by the umpires. This allowed the Hillcats to defeat the Jets in the first conference game of the season, 10-7.
Combing for seven hits, Trammell and Mitchell were the most powerful offensive threats for Newman once again, as their hitting led to five RBI's.
Landgarf allowed just three hits in 6.2 innings of work, while striking out five. Newton, who was given his first loss of the season, had a offeciant afternoon, also allowing just three hits.
The Jets have a chance to tie the series on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 2 PM.
