WICHITA - Newman Baseball got off to a slower start than they were usually accustomed too, as they could not pick up a win to tie the series against Rogers State on Saturday.
The two ball clubs went to eleven innings on Friday, with the both the Jets and Hillcats overcoming deficits to extend the game. Rogers State scored the deciding runs in the final inning in the Jets first MIAA game of the season.
It was a sluggish start from the Jets, with Rogers State getting three runs in the first inning.
Catcher
Garrett Arnold scored his third home run of the season in the fourth inning, giving Newman some life.
Another Newman run would be scored in the fifth, as a
Shawn Marquis single up the middle of the field allowed
Blake Mitchell to score.
The Hillcats simply had the better day on offense and defense, as they scored two runs in the top of the ninth to give them a 12-2 win.
Newman had several opportunities with runners in scoring position to score some runs and even when getting ten hits against their opposition, could not find enough consistent outings at the plate to score.
Colby Wilson got the start for Newman and struck out three batters in 4.1 innings of work. Four relievers would see action during the game as well.
Eli Wohl had the best day at the plate for the Navy and Red, getting three hits off of five at bats.
The Jets will look to turn the series around on Sunday, when they play in the series final against the visiting Hillcats, with first pitch at 1 PM.
