Jets to travel to Oklahoma and host two conference matchups this week

3/18/2024 4:18:00 PM

WICHITA - Softball comes back to action after Spring Break with three doubleheaders in a week. The first one will be on Tuesday and it will face the Jets with Southwestern Oklahoma State. After that, Newman will host back to back conference doubleheaders against Northwest Missouri State and Missouri Western on Friday and Saturday.

Last time out:

The Jets are on a four game winning streak after sweeping Mary and McPherson last week. It's the second time this season Softball has been able to win four games in a row.

Softball secured a sweep over McPherson in the last game they played. The Jets had a comfortable 7-5 win over the Bulldogs in a game where the Jets led from the third inning until the end of the end of the seventh.

Newman got their offense going with multiple Jets having a pair of hits in the game, and a fantastic performance from Paola Zamacona closed the game down on the defensive side.

Opponents:

Southwestern Oklahoma State:

Tuesday's double header will face the Jets with the Bulldogs. The first pitch for game one is scheduled at 2 PM.

The Bulldogs total a 9-16 record this season and have lost the last six games they've played, losing their last three to Harding this past weekend.

Newman won one of the two home games they played against the Bulldogs last year. Both games had a one-run difference with the first one going to the Bulldogs 3-4 and the Jets taking the second one 6-5.

Northwest Missouri State:

Newman will go back to conference play with a doubleheader against the Bearcats on Friday afternoon.

The Bearcats carry a 14-12 record and have won the last two games they've played. They're 3-1 in conference this season.

The last time Newman faced Northwest Missouri at home was in March of 2022. The Jets swept the Bearcats with two uncontested wins.

Missouri Western:

The last doubleheader of the week will face the Jets with the Griffons on Saturday afternoon.

The Griffons are 18-6 in the season and are undefeated in conference. Just like the Jets, the Griffons have won the last four games they've played.

The last time Newman faced Missouri Western was in March of 2023. The Jets won the last game 8-7 with a ninth inning walk off.

 Home talent:

Hayley Bonython leads the Jets offense with an impressive .441 hitting average, thirty hits, twenty four RBIs, and five home runs.

Freshman Malie Noda continues to be a big contributor for the Jets offense as well, having a .319 batting average, twenty three hits and fifteen RBIs.

Catcher Lauren Kwak continues to be a reliable bat for the Jets. Kwak totals nineteen hits, fifteen RBIs, and a .297 hitting average.

Jackie Gold, Paola Zamacona, and Kinyon DeCorte won and pitched a whole game in last week's doubleheader wins with Gold accumulating her fifth win of the season.

Up next:

After these matchups, the Jets will host a non-conference doubleheader against the Southern Nazarene Crimson Storms on March 26th at 2:00 PM.
