HAYS, Kan. - Newman Baseball picked up yet another MIAA win on the road, leading Fort Hays State the entire nine innings to secure their third win in their last four games.
The Jets were impressive in a series win over Missouri Western last weekend, with the finale being capped off with an 11-1 victory over the Griffons on Sunday.
The game in Hays was originally scheduled to be played on Tuesday, but due to inclement weather conditions the contest was moved to Wednesday.
Another hot start from the Jets started the game, as a 2 RBI home run bomb from
Garrett Arnold opened the game for Newman. The start was electric on offense, and it carried over in the next two innings for pitcher
Garrett Calderon.
Calderon struck out the first three batters he faced in the first, and would go on to strikeout two more in the second inning. He would finish the day with a total of six strikeouts.
The Tigers would get within a run after a passed ball with the bases loaded led to a Tigers runner scoring to give the Jets a one run lead after three innings.
The Jets would be in a similar situation with the bases loaded in the fourth, and after
Hunter Brown was walked,
Jack Kiser scored the Navy and Red's third of the game.
Shortly afterwards,
Blake Mitchell scored in what turned out to be a double play for the Tigers, making it home just before the second out was made.
Two more runs in the fifth gave Newman a 6-1 lead, and one that looked like was not going to be surrendered.
Despite the lead, the Jets were outhit by the Tigers. Fort Hays got two runs back in the seventh inning, while the Jets were struggling late to get on base.
Reliever
Andrew Prieve would come up in several clutch moments in the closing stages of the game, earning a save in a 6-4 win for the Jets.
Newman will be back at home for the first time in over two weeks beginning tomorrow, as they will look to continue their hot streak against #2 Central Missouri.
