Jets take on Mules in high scoring contest

Owens hits three RBI homer in fifth

WICHITA - Newman Baseball returned home for the first time in over two weeks, taking on the number two ranked Central Missouri Mule. The game saw multiple runs scored by both teams in the early parts of the game, but the Mules would eventually run away with the game after Newman had come within two runs.

The Jets had a successful week coming into Thursday, winning three out of their last four, including a win over Fort Hays State that saw a third conference road win in an exciting week for Newman Baseball.

It was not a great start for the Navy and Red, going down six runs in the first two innings. The Mules had a grand slam in the second to give them the big advantage.

Despite the deficit, the Jets kept up with the Mules with total hits. Connor Owens single in the third scored an Eli Wohl run, giving Newman a much needed boost.

Another home run gave the Mules an 8-1 lead in the fifth, but the Jets had plans of a comeback.

A three RBI home run from Owens reduced the deficit to four, and was followed up with a Shawn Marquis two RBI double. The Mules were hanging on to a close two run lead. It was the best inning of the day for Newman, scoring five runs and grabbing six hits.

Three straight solo shots from Central Missouri gave them five home runs in the game in the proceeding innings, as it looked like Newman's incredible comeback attempt was going to fall short.

Blake Mitchell had a solo home run of his own in the ninth, while a Garrett Arnold double scored two more. Despite putting up ten runs in the game, it was not enough as the Mules took game one, 20-10.

Owens almost equaled his RBI total from last weekend in the game, being credited with four.

The Jets will be back for the second game of the series tomorrow, with the first pitch at 2 p.m.
