WICHITA - Newman Baseball wrapped up their weekend series with number two Central Missouri on Sunday, with the game being a toughly contested game to end the series.
The Mules had simply been the better team on Friday and Saturday, as Newman was never really able to trouble one of the top ranked teams in the country.
Despite it being a close game at the end, the Mules once again were the ones to set the pace of the game, scoring four runs after two innings.
Pitcher
Colby Wilson helped the Jets stay within a touching distance of the Mules, keeping UCM scoreless for the next two innings. One more run would be scored in the fifth, coming off of a wild pitch.
Two big back to back hits from
Eli Wohl and
Garrett Arnold certainly changed the momentum of the game, as their hits scored three runs in the inning. Wohl got things started with a double that scored
Dalton Smith, while a Arnold single scored Wohl and
Hunter Brown. The Jets had three runs off of four hits, which was their best inning of the afternoon.
Reliever
Jaret Granger kept the Jets surge going, facing three batters and striking out two of them in the sixth.
Central Missouri would get a crucial run in the next inning, giving them a three run advantage in the last two innings.
Newman's day wasn't done however, as a big inning in the eighth really put pressure on the Mules.
Connor Owens got a single to start the inning, and after
Blake Mitchell and
Jack Kiser were both walked, the bases were loaded with no outs.
The Jets would score a run after
Dalton Smith was ruled out on a fielder's choice, allowing Owens to score. Kiser would score a second moments later, but a double play was made just after Kiser had reached home, retiring the sides.
Andrew Prieve got himself out of a tough situation in the ninth, setting the Jets up for a crucial bottom of the ninth.
The Mules were finally able to contain the Jets at the very end, escaping with a 6-5 win for the second ranked team in the country.
Wohl went three of five at the plate, having one RBI as well.
The Jets will be off until next Friday, were they will host the Washburn Ichabods for a weekend series.
