Baseball pulls off dramatic comeback against Ichabods in extra innings

Kinneberg home run in ninth inning extends game

WICHITA - Newman Baseball had an exciting start to their series with the Washburn Ichabods, coming back several times to pull off a late win at home. It was the Jets first conference win at McCarthy Field this season, with the game having its share of ups and downs from both teams.

Coming off a narrow loss to the number two ranked Central Missouri Mules, the Jets had some confidence on their side despite a tough weekend against the Mules.

The Ichabods scored all of their runs in the first two innings off of home runs, including a three RBI home run to open the game. The Ichabods held an early 4-0 lead after just two innings.

Pitcher Lance Elsen, while being rattled to start the game, did have five strikeouts in three innings of work to open the game, keeping a gap open for the Jets to break through.

Eli Wohl would start the momentum shift in the third inning, scoring a home run of his own.

Blake Mitchell's double would bring Connor Owens home for another run in fourth, and shortly after the Jets would take their first lead of the game.

Hunter Brown's three RBI bomb into left field gave Newman a 5-4 lead, but there was still plenty of game to be played. The roller coaster would continue until the bitter end.

Several scoreless innings would follow, thanks to good pitching from Cole Landgraf

However another three run home run from Washburn would give the visiting team the lead once again.

Wohl scored another run at the bottom of the inning, but it looked like Washburn had put the game away with a two run inning in the eighth.

Brown gave the Jets another lifeline with a single that scored Joe Kinneberg, After a shutout in the ninth, the Jets had one more opportunity to extend the game.

And extend the game they would. With two outs and a runner on base, Joe Kinneberg had the games biggest play off of a two RBI home run to put the game in extra innings.

Andrew Prieve made light work of the Ichabods, getting three batters out quickly.

Mitchell nearly got the winning run in the bottom of the tenth, but was called out at home off of a fielders choice from Wohl.

However, a clutch hit from Garrett Arnold would score Hunter Brown and win an incredible game at McCarthy.

Mitchell and Brown each had three hits, while three other batters would have two.

The Jets will go for a series win tomorrow, with game two scheduled for 11 a.m.
