WICHITA- Newman Softball comes back home after eight straight games away. The last time Newman hosted a game was on March 23rd in a doubleheader against the Missouri Western Griffons with a very powerful performance from the Jets in game two.
The Jets come back to action looking to bounce back after only being able to get one win in the last four games they've played.
Softball will face the Northeastern State RiverHawks on Friday and the Rogers State Hillcats on Saturday after the Senior Day celebration.
Last time out:
Newman faced the Central Missouri Jennies on April 6th in a doubleheader that was very challenging for the Jets.
The Jets were unable to get their offense going, only being able to score one run in two games.
Despite not having the best team day on offense, Jackie Gold had another outstanding performance to keep the Jets in the game. She accumulated seven strikeouts and only allowed two runs in the six innings she pitched.
Opponents:
Northeastern State:
The RiverHawks have a 7-28 record this season. They've only been able to win two games in conference. After their matchups against Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri they accumulated four straight games losing.
The last matchup between the Jets and the RiverHawks was on April 15th, 2023, with the RiverHawks barely taking the win with a 6-8 final score and a fifth inning that was too much for the Jets.
Rogers State:
The Hillcats are ranked fourth in the nation with a 34-6 overall record. They are 17-1 in conference play with their only loss being against Central Missouri. They are the defending national champions.
The Jets were able to upset the Hillcats in 2022 with a 3-2 win that secured the split for Newman in a heated battle between both teams.
Newman will compete against one of the best teams in the country in a highly anticipated game.
Prior to the games, the Jets will honor their six Seniors with a ceremony to recognize their contributions to Newman throughout their years as Jets.
Home talent:
The Jets offense is led by Junior Hayley Bonython. She averages a team leading .371 batting average, and accumulates thirty nine hits, thirty RBIs, and five home runs.
Malie Noda has been a trusted bat for the Jets this season as well. She averages .274 hitting, and has thirty one hits, eighteen RBIs, and ten runs.
Jackie Gold leads the Jets defense. Gold has won the most games pitching for the Jets (7) and accumulates a team leading sixty strikeouts.
Up next:
After these doubleheaders, the Jets will travel to Liberty, Missouri to play William Jewell in a non-conference doubleheader.
