4/15/2024 4:07:00 PM

WICHITA- Newman Softball starts their ten games away trip to finish the season on Tuesday, April 16th with a doubleheader against William Jewell. Following that, the Jets will travel to Kearney on Friday to play a doubleheader against Nebraska Kearney. To end this week's trip, Newman will travel to Hays to play Fort Hays State.

The Jets come back to action looking to bounce back after only being able to get one win in the last four games they've played.

Last time out:

Newman faced the #4 Rogers State Hillcats on Sunday afternoon. The games started after an emotional Senior Day celebration where all six Jet Seniors were celebrated and thanked for their contributions to the program throughout the years.

Despite having some great moments, the Jets were unable to stop the Hillcats offense in either one of the games showing why they are ranked as one of the best teams in the country.

Opponents:

William Jewell:

The Cardinals are 22-24 in the season but are only 5-15 in GLVC play. They won the last two games against Quincy University, with a close first game and an undisputed second one to claim their first conference sweep of the season.

The Jets have won the last three games against Jewell. The last time they faced each other was in February of this year. In that game, Newman took the win with a 3-1 score. Three runs in the first inning were enough for the Jets to get the win.

Nebraska Kearney:

The Lopers are 17-24 overall this season. They have only won five conference games, including two this past weekend against Lincoln to earn their first MIAA sweep of the season.

Newman is 3-3 overall against Kearney. The last time they faced each other each team won a game, with the Jets taking game two with a final 8-4 score. Softball will look to repeat that on Friday afternoon.

Fort Hays State:

The Tigers carry a 20-20 record this season. They have won six out of their eighteen conference games. Fort Hays is coming off of two close wins against Central Missouri in what was their second MIAA sweep of the season.

The last time Newman traveled to Hays was in 2022. Each team won one of the games with Newman taking the second game 6-5.

 Home talent:

The Jets offense is led by Junior Hayley Bonython. She averages a team leading .376 batting average, and accumulates forty four hits, thirty four RBIs, and six home runs.

Kayla Lopez has been one of the biggest contributors in the Jets offense lately, accumulating thirty three hits, four triples, thirteen RBIs, and a .273 batting average.

Jackie Gold keeps leading the Jets defense. Gold has won the most games pitching for the Jets (8) and accumulates a team leading seventy one strikeouts.

Up next:

After these doubleheaders, the Jets will travel to Pittsburg, KS and Joplin, MO for their last two doubleheaders of the season.
