Softball to wrap up season with two away doubleheaders

4/23/2024 2:15:00 PM

WICHITA -Softball travels to Pittsburg and Joplin to wrap up their season with two away conference doubleheaders. The Jets are wrapping up a record breaking season, accumulating twenty wins, a number never reached by any Newman Softball team ever.

Newman is coming back after two back to back splits against Nebraska Kearney and Fort Hays State. Both Newman's wins came after some impressive comebacks. The win against the Lopers came after a ten run top of the fourth inning which ended the game after the fifth inning. The win against the Tigers came after eight runs scored in the top of the fifth.

Opponents:
Pittsburg State:

The Jets will face the Gorillas on Wednesday afternoon with game one starting at 1 PM. The games were scheduled to be played on Friday but have been moved due to bad weather incoming in the area.

The Gorillas are 45-5 in the season and 19-3 in conference play. They are coming off of two wins against the Missouri Western Griffons. Before those games, the Gorillas lost 0-5 to Northwest Missouri in the second game of the doubleheader.

The last time the Jets faced the Gorillas was on April 30th of 2023. In that game, Newman scored five runs in the first couple of innings and that was enough for the Jets to take the win 5-4.

Missouri Southern:
The last doubleheader of the season for the Jets will be against the Missouri Southern Lions. Game 1 is set to start at 12 PM.

The Lions have a record of 30-19 in the season and a 10-12 conference one. They have lost nine out of their last ten games, including two against Northwest Missouri State, and will host the #5 Central Oklahoma before hosting the Jets.

Newman was able to beat the Lions a couple of seasons ago in a 7-5 game at NU Softball Field. The last game they played against each other was a 2-4 game that was decided in the first couple of inning after the Lions scored four runs and the Jets were unable to answer throughout the game.

Game two against the Lions will be the last Newman Softball game of the season.
