Jets grab game two win in contested double header

Softball splits with NWOSU in non-conference play

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WICHITA- The Jets hosted Northwestern Oklahoma State for a midweek, non-conference matchup. The Jets faced the Rangers earlier this year in the Branson Lead Of Classic where NWOSU was able to steal the game at 6-5. The Rangers took game one, 6-5 after holding off the Jets in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Jets battled out an extra inning win through ten innings at 7-6. 
 
Game 1: NU 5, NWOSU 6
Both the Jets and Rangers were held scoreless in the first inning. The Rangers were first to put a run on the board in the top of the second inning, scoring just one run to take the 1-0 lead. The Rangers were then able to tack on two more runs in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead at 3-0. In the fifth inning, the Rangers stretched their lead to 6-0 on just two hits in the inning. The Jets were able to cut into this deficit in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Torri Waggoner started off the inning with a double. Later in the inning, Gianna Navarro drew a walk with the bases loaded which pushed two runs across the plate after AJ Borja caught the Rangers defense sleeping and stole home after taking her free base  from the walk. This inning put the score at 6-2. The Jets then tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Reaghann Fairbairn started it off with a single. Travia Smith then pinch ran for Fairbairn. A bunt by Lauren McNaught pushed Smith to second. Then, a single by Waggoner scored Smith to make it a 6-3 game heading into the final inning. The Jets held the Rangers scoreless in the top of the inning. The Jets bats were rolling in the bottom of the seventh. Borja led off the inning with a single. Navarro added a single in the inning as well. Later, a double by Fairbairn scored two Jets runs to cut the deficit to just one at 6-5. The Rangers were then able to hold the Jets at five runs, taking the win at 6-5. 
 
Player Notes: 
- Fairbairn went 2-4 with 2 RBIs and a double.
- Waggoner went 2-3 with 1 RBI. 
 
Game 2: NU 7 , NWOSU 6 | 10 innings
The Rangers scored three runs to open up the top of the first inning. Back-to-back doubles helped the Rangers score three runs to make it 3-0. The Jets tallied three hits, but the Rangers were able to hold off the Jets in the bottom half of the inning. In the bottom of the third inning, the Jets were able to cut into the three run deficit. Lani Dryden led off the inning with a single. Dryden then advanced to second base on a passed ball. Madi Canez then singled which pushed Dryden to third, but Dryden was able to score off of a throwing error by the Rangers and Canez reached third off of the Ranger's error. Later, an RBI single from Navarro scored Canez to make it 3-2. The Jets took the lead from the Rangers in the bottom of the fourth. Malie Noda led off the inning with a single. McNaught followed up Noda's single with a single of her own. Then, a double by Waggoner scored them both to take the lead for the Jets at 4-3. The Jets were the next to put a run on the board, coming in the bottom of the sixth inning. Waggoner doubled to left field to start off the inning. Then a sacrifice bunt by Dryden pushed Waggoner to third. Waggoner would then score on a passed ball to push the Jets lead to 5-3. In the top of the seventh innings, the Rangers tied it at 5-5 with two hits and two runs in the inning. The Jets and Rangers held at five all until the top of the ninth when the Rangers took the 6-5 lead. In the bottom half of the ninth, Hannah Nordby doubled to get the bats going. Then, a single by Malie Noda scored Nordby to tie it at six all and forced a tenth inning. In the tenth inning, a runner was placed on second base to start off the inning. The Jets defense held off the Rangers in the top of the tenth, forcing NWOSU to leave a runner stranded on third. In the bottom of the tenth inning, Hayley Bonython was placed at second. Waggoner then reached first on a fielder's choice that pushed Bonython to third. Lani Dryden singled to the pitcher to load the bases. Madi Canez came up to the plate, and was hit by a pitch to drive the winning run in. The Jets took game two, 7-6 through ten innings. 
 
Player Notes:  
- Waggoner led the Jets with two doubles and two RBIs.
- Paola Zamacona gets the win in the circle. 
- Dryden went 3-5, scoring once. 
- Canez and Navarro both went 2-5 with one RBI apiece. 
- Nordby and Noda both went 2-4 from the plate. 
 
Up Next: The Jets head out onto the road to face Missouri Western on Friday starting at 2 PM and then will head to Northwest Missouri to face the Bearcats on Saturday starting at 12 PM.
