Jets Tie #18 Incarnate Word, 1-1

WICHITA - A strong, cold wind put a premium on offensive opportunities as Newman battled #18 Incarnate Word to a 1-1 double-overtime tie Sunday afternoon at Wilkins Field.

Battling winds that gusted near 40 mph, the teams combined to score a total of two goals in the match, both of which came in the first half. Incarnate Word (10-2-3, 5-1-1) opened the scoring 20 minutes into the contest when Lauren Cole's shot bounced off the crossbar and back into play, where Lauren Evans was able to put the ball past Newman (6-5-4, 4-2-2) keeper Christina Farid to give UIW a 1-0 edge.

Just better than 15 minutes later, Newman's Heather Baloga scored the equalizer, taking advantage of a UIW foul that set up a free kick from 18 yards out. Baloga lined up, and kicked the ball over a line of UIW defenders and into the right corner of the goal for her second goal of the season to tie the match at 1-1.

Neither team was able to score in the time that remained. Incarnate Word out-shot the Jets 14-6 in the second half and overtime periods, but both keepers stood strong. Farid finished with 10 saves, while UIW's Tori Puentes recorded five saves.

With the tie, the Jets move to 6-5-4 on the season, and 4-2-2 in Heartland Conference play, while Incarnate Word moves to 10-2-3 on the season, and 5-1-1 in conference action. Newman is back in action Oct. 23 when they travel to Austin, Texas to play league-leading and 10th-ranked St. Edward's in a 4 p.m. contest.
