Men's Soccer Falls to UTPB, 1-0

WICHITA - The Newman men's soccer team came out on the short end of a 1-0 decision in a rare Monday afternoon contest against Texas-Permian Basin at Wilkins Field. Goal keeper Stephen Williams gave up just one goal for the second game in a row, but the Jets offense was unable to score, suffering their fifth-straight shutout.

In one of the more even statistical first halves of the season, both teams took nine shots in the opening period, but neither offense was able to score. UTPB (3-8-1, 1-5) keeper Chris Benavides saved three shots on goal in the first half, while Newman (2-9-2, 1-4)'s Williams saved the only shot that threatened the goal in the first half. After 45 minutes, it was a scoreless draw.

That defensive stale mate continued in the second half. Both teams extended the scoreless outing into the 63rd minute, when UTPB's Isaias Miramontes squared up from 25 yards out, and kicked the ball over all NU defenders, and past Williams for the game's only goal.

Despite the 1-0 advantage the Falcons held on the scoreboard, Newman held the advantage in shots in the game, putting up 20 attempts while watching the Falcons shoot 17 times. The Jets were awarded 13 corner kicks, but were unable to convert.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 2-9-2 on the season, and 1-4 in Heartland Conference action. They will return to action Friday when they host St. Mary's in a 7 p.m. contest at Wilkins Field. Newman won the last meeting, defeating the Rattlers 3-2 in San Antonio.
