Incarnate Word Blanks Men's Soccer, 7-0

WICHITA - Incarnate Word scored early and often on their way to a 7-0 win over Newman on a cold Friday evening at Wilkins Field. NU keeper James Esquivel left the game in the first half with a wrist injury.

Incarnate Word (4-3-3, 2-0 HC) set the tone early in the match, netting their first goal just over four minutes into the contest when a Tom Morrill pass connected with Troy Thompson from five yards out. Newman (2-7-2, 1-2) held the Cardinals without a goal for the next 20 minutes, but UIW fwas able to net another goal at the 27:13 mark. This time it was Thompson who connected with Michael Terrell from close range and gave the visitors a 2-0 advantage.

Two minutes later the Jets received a scare. After saving a UIW shot, Newman keeper James Esquivel fell to the ground in pain. He was forced to leave the game with a wrist injury, and would not return. Freshman Hans Hassell replaced Esquivel in goal, and the Cardinals took advantage. UIW went on to add two more goals and took a 4-0 lead into halftime. The Cardinals added three more goals in the final 45 minutes on their way to a 7-0 win.

Incarnate Word out-shot the Jets 21-4 in the match. Esquivel posted two saves before leaving the match, while Hassell added six saves in the Jets' loss.

The Jets will look to get back on track Sunday when they host St. Edward's, a 2-0 winner at Texas-Permian Basin on Friday, in a 1 p.m. match at Wilkins Field.
