SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Newman men's soccer team wrapped up its road trip with a 4-0 loss to Incarnate Word Sunday afternoon at Benson Stadium in San Antonio. UIW out-shot the Jets 27-4 in the match.
Newman (3-11-3, 2-6-1) kept Incarnate Word (7-7-3, 5-3) off the scoreboard for the majority of the first half, giving up just one goal in the first 45 minutes of action. The Cardinals' only goal came when UIW's Michael Terrell connected with Jeff Boyer off a corner kick that Boyer pushed past Newman keeper
Stephen Williams to give UIW the early 1-0 advantage; a margin the Cardinals carried into the halftime break.
The Jets continued to hold the Cardinals at bay for the first 10 minutes of the second half before the flood gates opened. Incarnate Word scored three goals in the course of seven minutes to take a 4-0 edge before the UIW coaching staff started to clear the bench. Before it was over, 24 Cardinals played in the game, while 17 Jets saw action in the match.
Williams saved nine of the 13 shots that UIW put on goal, but gave up four goals in the process.
With the loss, the Jets fall to 3-11-3 on the season, and 2-6-1 in Heartland Conference play. They conclude their regular season Sunday, Nov. 8, when they travel to Odessa, Texas, to take on the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
