SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Kyle Chancellor's early second-half goal proved to be the game winner as Newman earned its first Heartland Conference win of the season with a 3-2 win over St. Mary's Sunday afternoon in San Antonio, Texas.
The Jets put forth their highest offensive output of the season in the three-goal match.
Marshall Johnston put the Jets on the board first needing just 12 minutes to put a
Joe Gerant pass past Rattler goalkeeper Brett Collier to give Newman a 1-0 edge. St. Mary's answered 10 minutes before the halftime break with a goal of their own, and sent the game into the intermission tied, 1-1.
Newman was determined in the second half. The Jets needed just 12 seconds for
Joe Gerant to break the tie and give the visitors a 2-1 edge, but St. Mary's responded three minutes later to knot the game at 2-2 with 42 minutes yet to play. The offensive onslaught continued as Chancellor scored what would prove to be the game winner just three minutes later to give the Jets the 3-2 advantage they would hold on to win by.
With the win, the Jets improve to 2-4-1 on the season, and 1-1 in Heartland Conference play. They will face a non-conference lineup next week, visiting Lone Star foe Northeastern State on Friday before hosting MIAA opponent Truman State in a noon match on Sunday at Wilkins Field
