Volleyball Suffers Saturday Sweep

MARYVILLE, Mo. - Newman was dealt two competitive losses in the final day of the Comfort INNvitational, which concluded Saturday at Bearcat Arena in Maryville, Mo. The Jets opened Saturday's play with a 3-1 (25-21, 18-25, 17-25, 19-25) loss to Texas A&M-Commerce, and finished their tournament with a 3-0 (19-25, 22-25, 19-25) loss to highly-touted Minnesota State-Moorhead.

Texas A&M-Commerce: 3, Newman: 1

The Jets took the opening set, 25-21, but TAMC rallied for wins in the next three consecutive sets to earn the 3-1 win. Senior Angie Bennett led the Jets with 12 kills, while junior Chelsey Potter added 11 kills on her way to an 11-kill, 16-dig double-double; her second double-double of the season. Her 16 digs led the team, while senior Amy Shorette added 15 of her own. Senior Caroline Painter was credited with assists on 33 of NU's 43 kills.

Newman hit at a .129 percent clip, while the Lions hit .232 percent as a team.

Minnesota State-Moorhead: 3, Newman: 0

Newman hung with the highly-touted Minnesota State-Moorhead Dragons, but it wasn't quite enough as MSUM earned the 3-0 sweep. Bennett and Potter each recorded nine kills to lead the Jets, while senior Kelly Larson added six kills of her own. Shorette recorded a team-high 18 digs, while Painter led the Jets with 18 assists. Junior Ashley Myers also posted double figures in the assists column, finishing the match with assists on 12 of Newman's 33 kills.

The Jets committed only one serve error, and hit .226 as a team, while the Dragons committed 11 service errors, but posted a .369 hitting percentage.

After going 1-3 in the tournament, the Jets stand at 3-5 on the season heading into their first home match of the season. Fourth-ranked Emporia State will pay a visit to Fugate Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. match Wednesday evening.
