Turnovers Plague Jets at UIW, 81-42

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Melissa Brockleman tied her career high of 15 points, but 28 turnovers cost the Newman women's basketball team in an 81-42 loss to Incarnate Word Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Incarnate Word (8-5, 3-0) scored the first points of the contest when Erica Sosa drained two free throws on the Cardinals' second possession. Newman (3-10, 1-2) countered with two free throws from Melissa Brockleman to tie the game at 2-2 just better than two minutes into the game. UIW responded with five straight points to take a 7-2 lead, but a three-pointer from Ellen Traylor brought the Jets back to within two, 7-5, at the 15:31 mark. A trey by UIW's Cinnamon Kava pushed the lead back out to five on the ensuing possession. Kava's trey ignited a 21-0 Cardinal run that kept Newman off the board until the 8:40 mark when Brockleman hit two more free throws, but the Cardinals had already seized control of the game with a 28-7 edge with 8:40 remaining in the opening frame. The Cardinals ended the first half on a 17-6 run and sent Newman to the locker room facing a 45-13 halftime deficit.

It didn't get any better for the Jets in the second half. Newman trailed by less than 30 on just three occasions in the final 20 minutes while the Cardinals ran away with the game, sending the Jets home with an 81-42 loss in their first Heartland Conference road game of the season.

Brockleman's 15 points tied her career high from last season's 15-point outing at Texas-Permian Basin, and was a team-high for Newman Saturday afternoon. She also grabbed four rebounds to tie teammate Rainey Nickel for the team's high rebounder.

Cinnamon Kava led Incarnate Word with 19 points in the game.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 3-10 on the season, and 1-2 in Heartland Conference play. They will return to action Monday when they travel across San Antonio to face St. Mary's in a 2 p.m. contest inside Bill Greehey Arena.
