WICHITA - Three seniors led the Newman volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-22) sweep of Texas A&M International Saturday afternoon inside Fugate Gymnasium.
Chelsey Potter led the Jets with 17 kills,
Victoria Green posted a team-high .667 hitting percentage, and
Ashley Myers set a team-high 24 assists as the Jets equalled their win total from the 2009 season.
Newman (11-14, 6-4 Heartland) took control early in the match, jumping out to a 4-1 lead, and maintained that lead throughout the set. Texas A&M International (1-21, 1-8 Heartland) tried to make things interesting late in the set, sneaking to within one point at 15-14, but the Jets countered with four-straight points behind the service of
Chelsey Potter, and cruised to the 25-18 first-set win.
The Dustdevils came out as the aggressors early in the second set, jumping out to a 4-1 lead of their own, but the Jets were up to the task. Newman countered with six-straight points to take a 7-4 lead, but TAMIU refused to go quietly. After tying the set at 10-10, both teams exchanged leads until the late stages of the set. The Jets took their final lead at the 19-18 mark, whien
Jeana Farruggia and
Victoria Green blocked a Bianca Mares attack. From there, the Jets held on, and took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-22 second-set win.
Neither team seemed interested in taking control of Saturday's third set. After spotting the Jets an early 3-1 lead, TAMIU rallied to take a 12-8 lead, but an errant attack by Mares pulled the Jets to within three, 12-9, and put junior defensive specialist
Kristen White at the service line. White promptly fueled a five-point rally that gave Newman a 14-12 lead. Again, the Dustdevils with two points to tie the set at 14-14, and kept within striking distance of the Jets until the 19-19 mark when a Potter kill broke the tie and gave Newman a lead it would never relinquish as the Jets secured the sweep with a 25-22 third-set win.
Chelsey Potter led the Jets offensively, finishing with 17 kills in the match, while
Victoria Green added 11 kills behind a team-high .667 hitting percentage.
Ashley Myers posted a team-high 24 assists in just two sets of work. Defensively, the Jets were led by
Amanda Savage's 14 digs.
With the win, the Jets improve to 11-14 on the season, and 6-4 in Heartland Conference play. They will return to action Friday, traveling to Fort Smith, Ark., to take on NCAA Div. II and Heartland Conference provisional member Arkansas-Fort Smith. First serve inside the Stubblefield Center is slated for 7 p.m.
