Late Rally Lifts Oral Roberts past Jets in OT

TULSA, Okla. - An apparent upset by the Newman men's soccer team turned into disappointment, as the Jets dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to NCAA Div. I foe Oral Roberts Wednesday evening at the ORU Soccer Complex in Tulsa, Okla. The loss was Newman's first overtime contest of the 2010 season.

Despite being out-shot 28-8, Newman (3-11) was never out of the contest. Oral Roberts (5-7-3) limited the Jets to just three first-half shots, but Newman keeper Robin Allard turned away all three shots on goal that came his way, and sent the match into halftime as a scoreless tie.

Newman took the field as the aggressors in the second half. A Marshall Johnston shot with 20:00 to play was denied by the bottom of the cross bar after eluding ORU keeper Andrew Techanchuk, but Nicos Esquivel made up for the missed opportunity just over 13 minutes later, sending a free kick into the back-right corner of the goal from inside of 18 yards, netting the game's first goal with just under seven minutes to play.

It looked as if the Jets had upset the Golden Eagles into the late stages of the match, but ORU's Jarrett Hamilton netted a desperation goal with 16 seconds remaining to force overtime.

Nathan Nece nearly ended the match for the Jets in the fourth minute of the first overtime, but his shot sailed just over the crossbar, leaving the 1-1 tie in tact. ORU made up for the Nece miss in the final two minutes of the overtime period when Hamilton struck again, this time drilling a pass from Aaron Douthit past Allard for the game-winner.

As a team, the Golden Eagles out-shot the Jets 28-8. Allard finished the match with eight saves, and held a shutout through 89 minutes.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 3-11 this season. They will return to action Sunday with a trip to Odessa, Texas, to take on the Texas-Permian Basin Falcons in a 1 p.m. contest.
