Jets Finish 2-2 at MSSU Crossover

Victoria Green was named to the MSSU Crossover All-Tournament Team
JOPLIN, Mo. - The Newman volleyball team posted a 2-2 record this weekend at the MSSU Crossover, which concluded Saturday in Joplin, Mo. The Jets picked up wins over Southwestern Oklahoma State and Texas Woman's, but dropped matches to #20 West Texas A&M and the hosts from Missouri Southern. Following the tournament, Victoria Green was selected to the MSSU Crossover All-Tournament Team.

#20 West Texas A&M 3, Newman 2 (25-22, 20-25, 25-19, 22-25, 15-8)
Newman (6-9) made nationally-ranked West Texas A&M (10-4) earn its win in the opening match of the MSSU Crossover. After trailing through most of the first set, the Buffaloes made a late rally to steal a 25-22 win from the Jets. Newman countered with a 25-20 win in the second set to tie the match at 1-1, only to watch WTAMU take a 2-1 lead with a 25-19 third-set win.

Unphased, the Jets pounded out 13 kills with just two errors on 40 attack attempts to even the match yet again with a 25-22 fourth-set win, but the Buffs picked up a 15-8 decision in the final set to win the match.

Victoria Green led the Jets with 16 kills and seven blocks. The senior hit .485 in the match without committing an attack error. Karol Marins added 11 kills, while Chelsey Potter finished with a 10-kill, 14-dig double-double. Lyndsey Martini was Newman's leading setter, finishing with 43 assists in the match, while Kristen White added a team-high 24 digs. She was one of four Jets with 10-or-more digs in the match.

Newman 3, Southwestern Oklahoma State 0
(25-11, 25-21, 25-16)
Newman (7-9) made its statement early, and needed just 59 minutes to breeze past Southwestern Oklahoma State (5-12) in Friday's nightcap. The Jets pounded the Bulldogs in a 25-11 opening set, then concluded the sweep with set scores of 25-21 and 25-16. Newman hit .243 in the match, recording 41 kills with 14 errors on 111 attack attempts. SWOSU, meanwhile, was limited to a .018 hitting percentage.

Chelsey Potter's 12 kills led the Jets in the match, while Karol Marins added 10 kills of her own. Lyndsey Martini set 31 of Newman's 38 assists in the match, while Kristen White did the dirty work defensively, finishing with 21 digs.

Newman 3, Texas Woman's 1 (25-22, 25-20, 18-25, 25-21)
The Jets earned their second-consecutive win over a Lone Star Conference team with a 3-1 win over the Texas Woman's Pioneers.

Newman (8-9) opened the match with a first set that saw the Jets hit .257, posting 16 kills on 43 attempts en route to a 25-22 first-set win. The Jets bested that by hitting .276 on their way to a 25-20 second-set win. Texas Woman's (4-13) countered with a 25-18 win in the third set to narrow Newman's lead to 2-1, but the Jets posted their best single-set hitting percentage of the match in the fourth set (.282) and secured the win with a 25-21 fourth-set win.

Victoria Green led the Jets offensively with 20 kills, while Allison Bailey added 10 kills of her own. Lyndsey Martini posted a career-high 50 assists in the match, while Kristen White added a team-high 18 digs in the match.

Missouri Southern 3, Newman 0 (27-25, 26-24, 27-29)
Newman (8-10) walked away from their final match of the tournament a total of six points shy of a win over the hosts from Missouri Southern (11-5). The Jets pushed each set to extra points, but couldn't find a way to get over the hump.

When the dust settled, the Jets had been held to a .144 hitting percentage, and fell victim to 17 blocks from the Lions.

Jeana Farruggia finished the match leading all offensive players in the match with 15 kills, while Chelsey Potter was next in line with 11 kills of her own. Lyndsey Martini was credited with 39 of Newman's 45 assists, while Kristen White finished the match with a game-high 18 digs.

Newman will take its 8-10 record back on the road this week to resume Heartland Conference play. The Jets will meet Texas-Permian Basin Thursday evening at 7 p.m. in Odessa, Texas, before a 1 p.m. match up with Oklahoma Panhandle State in Goodwell, Okla.
