Dustdevils Sweep Jets in Laredo

LAREDO, Texas - The Newman softball team was dealt its second-straight series sweep Saturday afternoon, dropping a 7-2 contest to Texas A&M International Saturday afternoon at Dustdevil Field in Laredo, Texas.

Texas A&M International (10-15, 6-0 Heartland) made the first move, scoring the first run of the game in the second inning, and taking a 1-0 lead after two innings. Newman (0-6, 0-6 Heartland) countered with their first run of the game in the fourth. A Lauren Rorebeck double to left field gave the Jets a runner in scoring position with just one out. Tracey Stefanski followed with a single to right, and allowed Rorebeck to move to third. Newman's next batter, Kayla Bontrager, gave the TAMIU left-fielder more business, with an RBI single that sent Rorebeck across the plate and tied the game a 1-1.

The Dustdevils answered back with a run of their own in their half of the fourth, and added four more runs in the fifth to take control of the game, leading 6-1 going into the sixth inning.

Stephanie Harshberger opened the sixth frame with a double to left field, and gave the Jets yet another runner in scoring position. Jennifer Stasiewicz singled to right field and moved Harshberger to third, putting runners in the corners for Rorebeck. Once again, the junior transfer delivered another double to left field, this time pushing Harshberger across the plate, but that's all the Jets could muster for the remainder of the game, as the Dustdevils picked up the 7-2 win to sweep the series.

Rorebeck finished the game 2-for-3 with one run and one run batted in, and led Newman offensively

Allison Thummel and Erin Schmidt split the pitching duties for the Jets. Thummel started the game and lasted four innings, giving up five hits and five runs, four of which were earned. Schmidt closed the game for Newman, going two innings and giving up six hits while allowing two earned runs.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 0-6 on the season, with an identical mark in Heartland Conference play. They will make a pit-stop in Kingsville, Texas, to take on Texas A&M-Kingsville Monday afternoon in a double-header slated for a noon start.
