KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Newman softball team opened its non-conference slate on a sour note, suffering a two-game sweep at the hands of Texas A&M-Kingsville Monday afternoon at Hubert Field in Kingsville, Texas. The Jets dropped game one, 4-1, before being dealt an 11-1 run-rule loss in the finale.
Game 1 - Texas A&M-Kingsville 4, Newman 1
Texas A&M-Kingsville (10-11) scored in all but two innings in the series opener. The Javelinas took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but Newman (0-7) answered with a run of its own in their half of the third. After a
Katie Traffas double to left-center field to open the inning,
Amy Bullerman moved Traffas to third on a sacrifice bunt, giving the Jets a runner on third with just one out. Newman's next batter,
Stephanie Harshberger, sent a high fly ball to center field where it was caught, but Traffas was able to score from third to tie the game at 1-1.
The Javelinas countered with another solo run in the third, and added single spots in the fourth and fifth innings while holding the Jets scoreless for the remainder of the game, en route to the 4-1 win.
Allison Thummel was Newman's only pitcher in the game, giving up 10 hits and four runs, all earned, in six innings of work. Thummel walked two, but struck out three in the losing effort.
Game 2 - Texas A&M-Kingsville 11, Newman 1 (5 Innings)
Texas A&M-Kingsville (11-11) dropped five-spots in the third and fourth innings to break a close game wide open. Newman (0-8) trailed 1-0 going into the third before giving up five runs. The Javelinas added five more runs, and led 11-0 before Newman even had a chance to get on the board.
The Jets scored their first run of the contest in the fifth inning. The Jets opened the inning with singles from
Amy Bullerman,
Amy Schneider, and
Stephanie Harshberger. A fielder's choice by
Lauren Rorebeck forced Bullerman out at home, but kept the bases loaded for Newman. The Jets' next batter,
Kayla Bontrager, reached on another fielder's choice that allowed Schneider to score from third, but forced Rorebeck out at second. Harshberger was thrown out at home after attempting to advance on a wild pitch to end the game.
Erin Schmidt was dealt her second loss of the season, falling to 0-2 after giving up six earned runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of work. The fresmhan struck out one, but walked five.
The loss sinks the Jets to 0-8 on the season. They will look for their first win this weekend, when they return to Wichita for their home opener Saturday against St. Mary's. First pitch at Newman Softball Field is slated for 3 p.m.
