WICHITA – St. Edward's used a high-powered offensive attack, while earning solid outings out of its pitchers en route to a three-game sweep of the Jets Friday and Saturday at NU Softball Field.
Game One: St. Edward's 5 – Newman 0
Both sides received a complete game from their starters, as
Allison Thummel (1-9) threw seven innings for the Jets, allowing five runs while scattering 10 hits in her seven innings of work. Paige Sandhal (11-4) took a no hitter into the seventh before shortstop
Kayla Bontrager broke it up with a bloop single.
Thummel and the Jets trailed just 2-0 through the fifth inning, but a three-spot in the top of the Sixth secured the win for the Hilltoppers. The visitors got two-hit performances out of Lexi Stevens and Lisa Paul to pace their offense.
Game Two: St. Edward's 16 – Newman 0
Five homeruns, including two off the bat of the Meagen Bailey, sparked the Hilltoppers' offensive explosion in game two.
Newman starter
Danielle Cobb battled the high-powered Hilltopper offense, but was tagged for six runs in the first inning to end her day.
Erin Schmidt relieved her in the top of the second, but was also unable to find success, surrendering 10 runs on 10 hits in her four innings in the circle.
Second baseman
Jennifer Stasiewicz tried to spark a Newman rally with a single in the bottom of the fourth, but to no avail. A three-run bomb in the third and a grand slam in the fifth did the Jets in, prompting the run rule.
Game Three: St. Edward's 13, Newman 0
Ally Valdez went three-for-three with two runs scored and an RBI as St. Edward's went on to take a 13-0 softball win over the Jets Saturday afternoon.
St. Edwards improves to 23-11 on the season and remains 11-0 in the Heartland Conference. Newman falls to 1-15 on the year, 0-12 in the Heartland.
Lisa Paul and Meagen Bailey each had a pair of RBIs for the Hilltoppers while third baseman Brianna Bozon was 1-for-1 with a run scored and an RBI.
