WICHITA - The Newman volleyball team moved into sole possession of second place in the Heartland Conference with a 3-1 win over Dallas Baptist Saturday afternoon at Fugate Gymnasium. Freshman setter
Lyndsey Martini posted her second-consecutive 48-assist game in the four-set win.
Newman (6-7, 3-1 Heartland) took the court looking like a team on a mission to open the match. The Jets recorded kills on 16 of their 31 attack attempts (.516 pct.), and didn't commit a single attack error on their way to a convincing 25-15 first-set win.
Dallas Baptist (7-8, 2-1 Heartland) made their statement in the second set, taking an early lead, then holding off a late Newman rally for a 25-22 second-set win to tie the match at 1-1.
The third set was a classic battle between two evenly-matched teams that refused to accept defeat. Newman took 29 attack attempts, and recorded kills on 13 of them, but gave up 15 kills on 36 DBU attack attempts, but a series of Patriot errors in the middle of the set proved to be the difference as Newman snuck away with a 25-23 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Newman had all the momentum it needed to win the match after holding on for the third set win. The Jets hit at a .300 clip in the final set, while holding DBU to just a .194 hitting percentage as Newman secured the match win with a 25-20 fourth-set victory.
Victoria Green led Newman's offense attack with 13 kills, and was one of three Jets to finish with 10-or-more kills. Freshman setter
Lyndsey Martini matched her career-high assist number, logging 48 set-assists for the second-consecutive game. Defensively,
Chelsey Potter led the Jets with 12 digs, while
Kristen White was right behind with 10 digs. Potter added 11 kills to her 12 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.
The Dallas Baptist offense was led by Becky Swann, who posted 12 kills.
With the win, the Jets improve to 6-7 on the season, and 3-1 in Heartland Conference play. The Jets will return to action Tuesday, traveling to Kansas City to take on Rockhurst in a 7 p.m. contest at Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse.
