Newman Tournament Notes

MSSU Tournament Central

The Newman volleyball squad continues its 2010 campaign Friday at the MSSU Crossover, hosted by Missouri Southern State University. Newman will face three Lone Star Conference foes (West Texas A&M, Southwestern Oklahoma State and Texas Woman's) before wrapping up the tournament against the hosts from Missouri Southern. Friday's games will be played in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center, while Saturday's contests will take place across the hall in Young Gym.

Newman brings an overall record of 6-8 into the tournament after suffering a 3-0 road sweep Tuesday night at Rockhurst. The Jets have bolted out to a 3-1 record in Heartland Conference play, and are tied for the first in the conference with just two matches remaining in the first rotation of conference play.

The Jets are led offensively by senior Chelsey Potter, who owns a team-high 124 kills, while junior Karol Marins has 110 kills of her own. Freshman Lyndsey Martini is Newman's primary setter, amassing 314 assists in her first season as a Jet. Defensively, junior Kristen White has a team-high 127 digs, while Potter is right behind with 123 digs.

Newman head coach Joanna Pryor is in her second season with the Jets after leading the team to an 11-21record last season.

Friday, Oct. 1 // 11:30 a.m. // Leggett & Platt Athletic Center // Joplin, Mo.
Newman opens the MSSU Crossover with an 11:30 a.m. date against the West Texas A&M Buffaloes. WT is 9-4 this season, and ranked 20th in the nation after a 3-0 road sweep of Central Oklahoma Saturday in Edmond, Okla. The Buffs have won six straight matches after dropping a 3-2 decision to Adams State on Sept. 11 in Denver, Colo.

Lauren Thedford is the Buffs' leading offensive threat, posting 126 kills through 13 matches this season, and is one of three Buffs with 100-or-more kills. Ashley Davis has 112 kills this season, while Erika Dupree is right behind her with 111 kills. Dupree is also WT's go-to setter, amassing 268 assists. Defensively, the Buffs look to Lauren Beville, who leads the team with 181 digs, but is one of three Buffs with 110-or-more digs.

WT Head Coach Jason Skoch is in his second season with the program. The Buffs posted a 39-4 record, and finished as the NCAA Div. II National Runners-up in Skoch's first season. Skoch has an overall record of 176-26 as a head coach.

Southwestern Oklahoma State
Friday, Oct. 1 // 7 p.m. // Leggett & Platt Athletic Center // Joplin, Mo.
The Jets will wrap up their first day at the MSSU Crossover with a 7 p.m. date with Southwestern Oklahoma State. The Bulldogs have struggled to a 5-10 record this season after a 3-0 home loss to Central Oklahoma Tuesday night in Weatherford, Okla.

SWOSU features a three-pronged offensive threat, led by Danielle Nelms, how has 127 kills on the season, while LaKendra Sanders is right behind with 125 kills. Callie Martin and Brooklyn Hendry split time as the Bulldogs' primary setters. Martin owns 232 assists this season, while Hendry has 194 assists. Defensively, Sladjana Simic does the dirty work, amassing 248 digs in 16 matches this season.

SWOSU Head Coach Bo Pagliasotti has been the Bulldogs' head coach since the program's inception in 2005. Prior to this season, the Bulldogs were 49-115 under Pagliasotti.

Texas Woman's
Saturday, Oct. 2 // 3 p.m. // Young Gym // Joplin, Mo.
Day two of the MSSU Crossover will present Newman's first-ever match-up with the Texas Woman's Pioneers. TWU is 4-9 this season after earning a road sweep over Texas A&M Commerce Saturday afternoon in Commerce, Texas.

The Pioneers have just one hitter with more than 100 kills. Andrea Rivera-Rojas has 101 kills this season, while Launa McClung is next in line with 94 kills. Sydney Veitenheimer has emerged as TWU's leading setter, tallying 249 assists this season, while Kendra Coulson has a team-high 228 digs to lead all Pioneer defensive players.

TWU Head Coach Shelly Barberee is in her eighth season with the Pioneers. She owned a 123-112 overall record prior to the 2010 season.

Missouri Southern
Saturday, Oct. 2 // 5:30 p.m. // Young Gym // Joplin, Mo.
Newman concludes the MSSU Crossover with a 5:30 p.m. match against the hosts from Missouri Southern. The Lions enter the tournament with an 8-4 record after a 3-0 sweep over in-state rival Missouri Western Saturday inside Young Gym, where the Lions are 2-1 this season.

The Lions are led offensively by Ashlee Russell, who leads the team with 123 kills, but Rachel Olinyk has proven more than able to get the job done, tallying 108 kills of her own. Elin Skei is MSSU's primary setter with 395 set assists this season. Defensively, the Lions look to Shakila Balkhi, whose 157 digs is a team-high.

MSSU Head Coach Chris Willis is in his sixth year at the healm of the Lions' program, and owns a 90-113 record in that time.
