Volleyball Splits Opening Day in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. - The Newman volleyball team split its opening day matches at the UNO Volleyball Showcase, hosted by the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The Jets opened the tournament with a three-set loss to the hosts from UNO, but rallied for a three-set sweep of Chadron State later in the day.

Match 1: Nebraska-Omaha 3, Newman 0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-23)
Newman kept things interesting in their first match of the season, dealing with a Nebraska-Omaha squad that posted a 20-14 record last season. Due to technical and staffing issues, complete statistics from this game were not available. 

Match 2: Newman 3, Chadron State 0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-15)
The Jets came out on fire, recording 15 kills on 28 attack attempts with just two errors for a .464 hitting percentage in the opening set. Newman added 10 kills in the second set, then notched eight more in the match-clinching third set. 

Junior transfer Karol Marins led Newman's offensive effort with eight kills, while Allison Bailey finished with six kills. Victoria Green added five kills on nine attempts with no errors for a team-high .556 hitting percentage. Freshman Lyndsey Martini carded 12 assists to lead all Newman setters. 

Defensively, Kristen White notched 12 digs in the match to led the Jets. 

As a team, Newman hit at a .279 clip, recording 33 kills on 86 attempts with just nine errors.
The Jets are back in action Saturday, facing Northwest Missouri State and Adams State in the final day of the UNO Volleyball Showcase.
