Chris Vaughn's 78th minute goal broke a scoreless tie, and led the Newman men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Heartland Conference rival St. Edward's Friday afternoon in Austin, Texas. The win was Newman's first since a 2-1 win over Eastern New Mexico on Sept. 25.
-It took 78 minutes to break the ice, but
Chris Vaughn scored the only goal of the contest when he beat SEU keeper John Kaschak one-on-one off a break away, unassisted, to give the Jets the 1-0 advantage. The goal marked Vaughn's fifth of the season. He is now tied with
Amadou Doumbia for the most goals scored this season.

Steven Hamersky made his first start of the season, and turned away both Hilltopper shots that came his way to pick up his first collegiate shutout.
-Newman was out-shot 10-4 in the match. Eight of SEU's 10 shots came in the second half. The Jets put three shots on goal while the Hilltoppers put just two shots on target.
-The Jets earned three corner kicks in the match, while St. Edward's was awarded four chances from the corner, three of which came in the second half.
-St. Edward's was whistled for 14 fouls in the match. Newman committed eight.

With the win, the Jets improve to 4-9-1 on the season, and 2-2-1 in Heartland Conference play. Newman will return to action Sunday, hosting Truman State. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30, but will begin no sooner than 30 minutes following the conclusion of the women's match with Texas A&M International.
