Box Score AUSTIN, Texas - Chris Vaughn's 78th minute goal broke a scoreless tie, and led the Newman men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Heartland Conference rival St. Edward's Friday afternoon in Austin, Texas. The win was Newman's first since a 2-1 win over Eastern New Mexico on Sept. 25.

-It took 78 minutes to break the ice, but Chris Vaughn scored the only goal of the contest when he beat SEU keeper John Kaschak one-on-one off a break away, unassisted, to give the Jets the 1-0 advantage. The goal marked Vaughn's fifth of the season. He is now tied with Amadou Doumbia for the most goals scored this season.

-Freshman Steven Hamersky made his first start of the season, and turned away both Hilltopper shots that came his way to pick up his first collegiate shutout.

-Newman was out-shot 10-4 in the match. Eight of SEU's 10 shots came in the second half. The Jets put three shots on goal while the Hilltoppers put just two shots on target.

-The Jets earned three corner kicks in the match, while St. Edward's was awarded four chances from the corner, three of which came in the second half.

-St. Edward's was whistled for 14 fouls in the match. Newman committed eight.

-The match's only card was issued to Newman's Brandon Carlos, who was booked in the 87th minute

With the win, the Jets improve to 4-9-1 on the season, and 2-2-1 in Heartland Conference play. Newman will return to action Sunday, hosting Truman State. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30, but will begin no sooner than 30 minutes following the conclusion of the women's match with Texas A&M International.
