Men's Soccer Ousts Truman for Second Straight Win

Box Score WICHITA - The Newman men's soccer team enjoyed its first multi-goal game in nearly a month, and picked up a 2-1 win over non-conference rival Truman State Sunday afternoon at Wilkins Field. Sebastien Negro and Nicos Esquivel each scored goals in the win.

-Newman needed just 10 minutes to score the game's first goal. A Pharouk Hussein pass to Sebastien Negro was tapped in for Negro's first goal of the season to give the Jets a 1-0 lead just four seconds into the 11th minute.

-Truman State answered just better than 10 minutes later when Andy Chapman scored on a break-away one-on-one situation to tie the match at 1-1 in the 21st minute.

-The match remained tied for the next 17 minutes until Robert Butler's pass found Nicos Esquivel, who tapped-in a close-range shot from the right side to give Newman the 2-1 advantage it went on to win by.

-Despite taking 13 shots in the second half, and out-shooting Truman 17-11 in the contest, Newman was unable to score in the second half.

-Freshman keeper Steven Hamersky made his second-straight start, and picked up his second-straight win to improve to 2-0 on the season. Hamersky was forced to make just two saves in the contest

-Truman State earned five corner kicks in the contest, while Newman was given four chances from the corner.

-Thirty-one fouls were issued in the match. Newman was whistled for 16 miscues, while Truman State was tagged with 15 fouls.

-Six cards were issued in the match. Four Bulldogs were booked, while cautions were issued to Newman's Matheus Daniel and Amadou Doumbia.

-Sunday marked the first multi-goal match by Newman since Sept. 25 when the Jets beat Eastern New Mexico, 2-1, in Portales, N.M. It was the first time the Jets had scored more than one goal at home since a 3-1 win over Sterling on Sept. 9.

With the win, the Jets improve to 5-9-1 on the season. They will return to action Friday in their final home match of the season, hosting Texas-Permian Basin in a 7 p.m. contest at Wilkins Field.
