Seniors Shine in Senior Night Loss

WICHITA - Senior night may not be a memorable one for the four seniors on the Newman volleyball team, which was swept by Arkansas-Fort Smith Friday evening inside Fugate Gymnasium. The four seniors combined for 10 kills and 29 assists in the loss.

- Newman took an early 3-1 lead in the opening set, and pushed that lead to 5-3 after an Arkansas-Fort Smith service error, but the Lady Lions responded with three-straight points to take a 6-5 lead after back-to-back attack errors from Haley Dotson. UAFS extended its lead to as much as 15-9, and seemed to have control of the set, but the Jets clawed their way back into things, pulling to within two, 19-17 on a Gabby Loxterman kill, narrowed the Lady Lion lead to 23-22 late in the set, but UAFS was able to close out the set for the 25-22 win.

- Arkansas-Fort Smith made its statement early in the second set, jumping out to a 10-4 lead, but again the Jets were up to the task. Newman reeled off five-straight points, thanks in part to back-to-back Jeana Farruggia kills, and narrowed its deficit to 11-10 after a Katelyn Schmidtberger kill. Persistence paid off for the Jets, who were able to tie the match at 17-17 after a Lady Lion attack error. The match remained tied at 19-19 after another Farruggia kill, but a two-point UAFS swing gave the Lady Lions the momentum they needed to take a 2-0 advantage with a 25-22 second-set win.

- The Jets were determined to extend the match in the third set, keeping within two points of the Lady Lions, and even holding an 11-10 lead thanks to a Karol Marins kill, but UAFS took the wind out of the Newman sails over the course of the next few moments. The Lady Lions reeled off four straight points to take a 14-11 lead, and quickly extended that lead to 19-13 before an atack error forced a sideout, but the Jets were only able to earn one point in the process. UAFS scored five of the final six points in the set, and won the match with a 25-15 third-set victory.

- Senior Karol Marins led the Newman offense with 10 kills on 27 attempts, and committed just four errors en route to a .222 hitting percentage for the match. Haley Dotson, Katelyn Schmidtberger and Jeana Farruggia each added eight kills for the Jets.

- Seniors stole the show defensively as well. Senior libero Kristen White cleaned up 14 digs, while senior defensive specialists Michelle O'Dell and Amanda Savage combined for 15 digs. Katelyn Schmidtberger added 14 digs of her own to tie for the team high.

- Sophomore setter Gabby Loxterman set 31 of Newman's 36 assists in the contest.

- As a team, Newman hit .124 in the match, recording 38 kills and committing 21 attack errors on 137 attempts.

- Arkansas-Fort Smith hit .308 in the contest, and was led by Heidi Luks and Fabiane Nass, who notched 11 kills each.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 4-21 on the season, and 1-11 in Heartland Conference play. They will return to action Thursday, traveling to Odessa, Texas, to take on the Texas-Permian Basin Falcons in a 7 p.m. contest.
