Rattlers Strike Jets in Season Finale, 2-1

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TexasJordan Saybounkham scored the Jets' only goal as the Newman men's soccer team dropped its final game of the season 2-1 to St. Mary's Sunday in San Antonio. Saybounkham fired three of Newman's ten shots in the contest.

- Newman jumped out to a 1-0 lead after Jordan Saybounkham escaped two St. Mary's defenders and fired a shot into the back of the net in the 27th minute.

- The Jets were able to hold off a Rattler counter attack through the first half but St. Mary's quickly tied things up in the second half when Eduardo Serrano beat Newman keeper Steven Hamersky in the 46th minute for the equalizer.

- Newman battled back but the Rattlers were able to find the back of the net once again when Rodrigo Ramos headed in a free kick ball from Aaron Stares to give St. Mary's a 2-1 lead.

- The Jets' Steven Hamersky made one save in the contest and fell to 3-1 on the season with the loss.

- Newman out-shot St. Mary's 10-6 and held an 11-4 corner kick advantage in the match.

Brandon Carlos led the Jets' offense with three shots while Saybounkham scored the only Newman goal.

- Twenty penalties were called in the match, 11 against St. Mary's and nine on Newman.

- Seven yellow cards and two red cards were also given out in the match. Four yellow cards went against St. Mary's while three yellow cards and both red cards were given to Newman.

With the loss the Jets finished their season at 6-10-1 overall and 3-3-1 in Heartland Conference play, good enough for a second place finish.

The team will bid farewell to seniors Chris Vaughn, Pharouk Hussein, Raul De La Torre, Randolph Love and Hugo Rayo.
