Box Score WEATHERFORD, Okla. - The Newman women's basketball team rallied from a nine-point second-half deficit, but 24 turnovers helped lead to a 71-65 overtime loss to Southwestern Oklahoma State Thursday evening inside Rankin Williams Fieldhouse in Weatherford, Okla.
Satoria Bell scored 26 points in the loss.
The first half was a battle between two scrappy teams, as Newman backed its number one ranked scoring defense in the Heartland Conference, forcing eight turnovers and four steals. SWOSU made Newman play at its high-pace, forcing the Jets to play 10 out of the 11 players who made the trip.
The Bulldogs countered Newman's opening basket of the game with a 10-2 run to take a 10-4 lead less than five minutes into the contest. SWOSU held the lead until a
Satoria Bell lay-up gave the Jets a 19-18 lead at the 9:18 mark. The two teams exchanged the lead twice over the next two minutes until a five-point Bulldog spurt gave the hosts a 29-24 lead with 3:06 to play. SWOSU took a six-point lead into the final two minutes of play, but by halftime, Newman had narrowed the gap to two, and trailed 36-34.
Satoria Bell proved to be the go-to first-half scorer for the Jets, dropping 12 first half points. Newman displayed good offensive balance in the period, as four Jets scored four or more points. The Jets held the Bulldogs to 42.9 percent shooting (15-35), but have allowed SWOSU to shoot 50 percent (5-10) from beyond the arc. SWOSU converted just 16.7 percent (1-6) of its free throws in the first half.
The Bulldogs opened the second half with a 6-2 run, and held a 42-36 lead less just over two minutes into the period. Newman countered with an 8-2 rally, and tied the game at 44-44 after a pair of
Tasha Cannon free throws, but SWOSU scored the next seven points to take a 51-44 lead with 12:35 still to play. The Bulldogs led by as many as nine, 55-46, with 8:35 to play, but the Jets were far from finished. A
Sam Soyez free throw with 5:51 to play sparked a 13-0 Newman run that gave the Jets a 59-55 lead with 2:41 remaining. Newman held the lead until the 20-second mark when a pair of MaRiah Oyler free throws tied the contest at 61-61, and forced overtime.
SWOSU made its statement early in the overtime period, scoring the first five points of the extra frame, and taking a 66-61 lead in the process. Newman clawed back, pulling to within one when a pair of Bell free throws narrowed the gap to 66-65, but those were Newman's final points of the contest. The Bulldogs ended the extra frame on a 5-0 run, and handed Newman its second loss of the season with a 71-65 overtime decision.
Satoria Bell led all scorers with 26 points in the contest, while
Tasha Cannon added 14 points, and led all rebounders with 13 boards for her third double-double of the season.
As a team, Newman shot 37.9 percent (25-66), and missed all nine of its attempts from long range. The Jets converted 83.3 percent (15-18) of their free throws. Newman out-rebounded SWOSU 45-43 in the contest, and forced 25 Bulldog turnovers while committing 24.
Darcie Dick and Sumiya Darden each scored 20 points to lead the Bulldogs.
With the loss, the Jets fall to 6-2 on the season. They will return to action Saturday, hosting the East Central Tigers. Tip-time is slated for 2 p.m. inside Newman's Fugate Gymnasium.
