WICHITA- The Newman women's basketball makes its return from Christmas break Wednesday, when they travel to Commerce, Texas to take on the Lions of A&M-Commerce. The Jets will look for their fourth-consecutive victory after dismantling McPherson, 96-37 on Dec. 17. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside the historic A&M-Commerce Field House.
Jets Heating Up...
The Jets have rebounded nicely since suffering their second loss of the 2011-12 campaign in a 71-65 decision at Southwestern Oklahoma State on Dec. 1. Newman has won three in a row since that loss, and has averaged 78.7 points per game, while surrendering just 49.7 points per contest to its opponents during that winning streak. For the season, the Jets are averaging 70.1 points per game, while shooting 44.5 percent from the field. Newman is holding its opponents to a Heartland Conference-best, 55.7 points per game, out-scoring its opposition by 14.4 points per game. On the boards, the Jets are out-rebounding their opponents by 7 rebounds per contest.
Satoria Bell has led Newman's offensive attack thus far in the season, averaging a Heartland Conference best, 24 points per game. Bell is joined in double-figures by
Tasha Cannon, who is averaging a 14.3-point, 10.5-rebound, double-double on the season. Cannon is leading the Heartland Conference in rebounds per game.
Kianna Flannagan and
Sam Soyez have been steady at the point-guard position, each averaging 2.5 assists per contest.
On the road, Newman holds a record of 1-2, its only victory coming off of a 67-50 decision at Missouri Southern. Away from Fugate Gymnasium, the Jets are averaging 66.3 points per game, shooting 41.7 percent from the field.
Making Their Mark...
Satoria Bell and
Tasha Cannon have each established themselves as some of the best women's basketball players in all of NCAA's Division II. Bell is the nation's leading scorer, recording 240 points through 10 games in her first season with the Jets. Bell's 24.0 point-per-game average is the second-best mark in the nation, trailing only North Georgia's Jaymee Carnes, who is averaging 26.0 points through seven games this season.
Cannon, meanwhile, is tied for sixth in the nation with six double-doubles through 10 games in her final season with the Jets. Caldwell's Jeanette Anderson and Concord's Jolysa Brown each have eight double-doubles to lead the nation.
Last Time Out...
Newman set numerous season-highs, as they pummeled McPherson 96-37 on Dec. 17.
Satoria Bell led the offensive charge,scoring a game-high 25 points. Bell was joined in double-figures by three other Jets.
Tasha Cannon notched her sixth double-double of the season, with an 18-point, 10-rebound performance.
Alina Voronenko set a career-high, and Samantha Soyez set a season-high with 11 point outings.
Ellen Traylor also set a career-high with six points.
As a team, Newman re-wrote the record books, setting season-highs in the following: largest halftime lead (20), largest margin of victory (59), largest lead (61), points scored (96), rebounds (46), assists (26), steals (13), field goals made (36), and three-point field goals attempted (19).
Scouting Texas A&M-Commerce...
Texas A&M-Commerce comes into Wednesday's match-up with an overall record of 1-8, and an 0-4 mark in Lone Star Conference play. The Lions are coming off a 78-67 decision at the hands of Heartland Conference foe, Texas A&M International on Dec. 17. The loss stretched their losing streak to five games. Breanna Harris was one three Lion starters to score in double-figures, leading the team with 15 points. Danielle Dixon and Michelle Sutton contributed 14 and 11 points respectively.
Dixon has led the A&M-Commerce offense thus far in the season, averaging 13.9 points per game. Dixon is joined in double-figures by Harris' 10.6 point-per-game average. Harris has also led the Lions on the glass, averaging 8.5 rebounds per game. As a team, A&M-Commerce is averaging 60 points per game, shooting 37.1 percent from the field. The Lions are being out-scored by their opponents by 16.6 points per game.
Trying Something New...
Wednesday's meeting marks the first time that Newman and A&M-Commerce have met on the hardwood.
