Box Score COMMERCE, Texas -
Satoria Bell's 34-point effort led the Newman women's basketball team to a 73-59 win over Texas A&M-Commerce Thursday evening inside The Field House in Commerce, Texas. The win was Newman's fourth-straight, and the 10th win of the season.
Senior
Satoria Bell scored six of her 34 points in the first three minutes of the contest, and gave Newman (10-2) an 8-2 lead with a lay-up at the 17:03 mark. Buckets from Bell and
Tasha Cannon pushed the Jets' lead to 11-2 just 30 seconds later, and eliminated much of the Texas A&M-Commerce (1-9) momentum in the early stages of the game. By the half-way point of the first half, Newman had increased its lead to 19-5 after an old-fashioned three-point play. The Jet were never seriously threatened as the first period progressed, leading by as many as 18 when another Bell lay-up pushed the Jets to a 33-15 lead with five minutes remaining. The hosting Lions showed signs of life in the late stages of the half, but couldn't make up any ground as the Jets took to the halftime locker room with a 39-18 lead.
Despite having won just one game all season, the Lions refused to go out quietly on their home court. Trailing 54-29 with 12:53 to play, Bianca Stevenson sank a jumper that sparked a 30-12 run, and narrowed the newman margin to seven, 66-59, with 2:23 to play. But an
Alina Voronenko jumper with 1:58 remaining brought the Lions' run to a screeching halt. Newman scored the final seven points of the game, and picked up its 10th win of the season with a 73-59 road decision.
Satoria Bell led all scorers with 34 points in the win, and used a 12-for-20 effort from the field, and an eight-for-10 outing at the charity stripe to get there.
Tasha Cannon added 11 points, but just four points in the win.
Alina Voronenko grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to lead the Jets.
Danielle Dixon led the Lions with 23 points, while Breanna Harris added an 11-point, 14-rebound double double in a losing effort.
As a team, Newman shot 48.1 percent (26-54) from the field, and 54.3 percent (19-35) from the free throw line. Texas A&M-Commerce out-rebounded the Jets, 49-36, but Newman forced 22 rebounds while committing just 10 turnovers.
With the win, the Jets improve to 10-2 on the season. They will return to action Monday, hosting NAIA foe Ottawa in a 6 p.m. contest inside Fugate Gymnasium.
