Women's Basketball Hosts Ottawa to Open 2012

WICHITA- The Newman women's basketball team wraps up non-conference play Monday, when NAIA adversary Ottawa visits Wichita. Monday's match-up is the first of four consecutive home games for the Jets. Tip-time is set for 6 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.

Jets Surging...
The Jets have reeled off four straight victories since suffering their second loss of the 2011-12 season, a 71-65 decision at Southwestern Oklahoma State on Dec. 1. During its most recent winning streak, Newman is averaging 77.3 points per game, shooting 46.9 percent from the field. On the season, the Jets are averaging 70.3 points per game, converting 44.7 percent of their field goal attempts.

Best of the Best...
Two Jets are making their mark as some of the best women's basketball players in NCAA Division II. Senior Satoria Bell's 274 points leads the nation, while her 24.8 point-per-game average ranks second in all of NCAA Division II, through 12 games. Tasha Cannon joins Bell in double-figures, averaging 14.0 points per game. Cannon is a perennial double-double threat, ranking sixth in the country with six double-doubles thus far in the season.

Last Time Out...
In its first game since coming back from Christmas break, Newman ran past Texas A&M-Commerce, 73-59, on Dec. 29 in Commerce, Texas. Satoria Bell continued her rapid scoring pace, leading the Newman offense with 34 points on 12-for-20 shooting from the field. Bell was joined in double-figures by Tasha Cannon's 11 point effort. Alina Voronenko led Newman's glass attack, notching a career-high nine rebounds. As a team, the Jets shot 48.1 percent (26-54) from the field. Newman continued its defensive prowess, forcing 22 turnovers, while committing just 10 turnovers.

Scouting Ottawa...
The Braves enter Monday's game with a record of 5-8, and a 3-1 mark in KCAC play. Ottawa is coming off of a 78-59 defeat at the hands of Oklahoma Wesleyan in Bartlesville, Okla. on Dec. 13. The Braves are led by sophomore forward, Amber Ramsey's 11.5 point-per-game average. Ramsey is also leading Ottawa's rebounding efforts, averaging 6.8 rebounds per contest. As a team, Ottawa is averaging 58.7 points per game, shooting 35.9 percent from the field.

Ottawa last played on Dec. 16, dropping a 72-42 exhibition decision to William Jewell.

Just Like Old Times...
Monday's meeting marks the 20th lifetime meeting between Newman and Ottawa. The series dates back to Dec. 13, 1975, when the Jets defeated the Braves 38-35 in Wichita. Newman leads the all-time series, with a record of 12-7. The Jets are riding a two-game winning streak over the Braves, the most recent a 83-55 decision on Dec. 14, 2010 in Wichita.
