Bulldogs Blaze Past Jets 79-68

Box Score Wichita, Kansas- The Newman women's basketball team dropped their second straight home game to the Bulldogs from Southwestern Oklahoma State University 79-68 this Wednesday inside Fugate Gymnasium.  Kianna Flannagan led the Jets with 20 points.

The Bulldogs got things rolling with a three-point basket in the first minute and held the early lead until a lay-up from Cheniqwa Banks gave the Jets an 11-9 lead with 15:10 remaining in the half.  Southwestern Oklahoma fired back and quickly tied things up at the 11:51 mark.  The Bulldogs continued to lead the charge, including an unanswered nine-point scoring run that gave them a 40-22 advantage with three minutes left in the half.  A three-pointer and free throw from Sheba Goode followed by another free throw from Kianna Flannagan cut the Bulldog's lead to 45-29 heading into the locker rooms.

Newman came out in the second half with a tremendous effort, outscoring SWOSU 39-34.  Cheniqwa Banks assisted the Jets with three consecutive three-point baskets in a 13-point run early in the half, slicing the Bulldog lead to a mere seven points.  Banks later sunk two back-to-back three point baskets, making the score 65-51 SWOSU at the 8:52 mark.  Newman continued to battle back, but unfortunately had too much ground to make up.  The game ended with a pair of free throws from Sarah Mendoza to make the final score 79-68 Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

Kianna Flannagan led the Jet with 20 points on the night.  Cheniqwa Banks was the standout star from behind the arc with an impressive five-for-eight effort.  Alexandra Ciabattoni and Kianna Flannagan both had nine rebounds, while Naomi Rosales took three steals.

As a team, Newman shot 35.8 percent (24-67) from the field and 62.5 percent (10-16) from the charity stripe.  Southwestern Oklahoma State narrowly outrebounded the Jets 40-39.

With the loss, the Jets move to 3-6 (0-1 Heartland).  Newman returns to action this Saturday as they travel to Liberty, Mo. and take on the Cardinals of William Jewell College.
