WICHITA- The Newman baseball team earned its first home victory of the season on Friday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State at McCarthy Field.
Brandon Droge paved the way for the Jets with a 13-strikeout complete game effort.
In a battle of pitchers, Oklahoma Panhandle State (0-7, 0-4 HC) looked to strike first in the top of the first inning. After Droge retired the first two batters, the senior from Topeka, Kan. hit Tyler Patterson, before giving up a double to Dillon Doucette. Droge struck out the next batter to will himself out of the jam.
The Aggies threatened again in the top of the third, when Jamie Bahr led off the inning by reaching first on a throwing error by Droge. Bahr reached second following a Colton McKithan sacrifice bunt. Droge then put the next two batters on base by hitting Patterson once more, and walking Doucette, but got himself out of another jam by getting Art Knapp to pop up to first, and striking out Thomas McGuckin.
The only run of the game came in the bottom of the frame.
Jace Moore led off the bottom half of the third with a double to left-center. Moore advanced to third following a
Jacob Gaul groundout, and
Tanner Vinson drove in Moore on an RBI single up the middle to give Newman (3-4, 3-4 HC) a 1-0 lead.
That was the only run-support Droge needed. The transfer from West Florida, struck out 11 batters in the final six frames to preserve the 1-0 victory. Six Jets recorded hits in the ball game.
The Jets will wrap up the series on Saturday, with a double-header starting at 12 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
