Softball Opens Season at South Central Shootout

The Newman softball team opens its 2012 campaign by playing six games in three days at the 2012 South Central Shootout in Durant, Okla. The event, which is hosted by Southeastern Oklahoma State University, will feature 16 teams from six different conferences.

Game 1 vs. Missouri Western (Friday, Feb. 17 - 10 a.m.)
The Griffons enter the South Central Shootout with a 4-2 record following the OBU/MSU Classic in Arkadelphia, Ark. Missouri Western is averaging 2.0 runs per game, and is led offensiviely by freshman Breanna Fleschner with a .600 batting average (2-5). Sophomore Jackie Bishop has been an opposing figure on the bump, boasting a 3-0 record and a 0.41 ERA. Bishop has struck out 35 batters in 22.0 innings pitched.

Game 2 vs. Northeastern State (Friday, Feb. 17 - 2 p.m.)
Northeastern State comes into the tournament fresh off of a sweep of Arkansas Tech (6-5, 2-1) on Feb. 12. The Riverhawks feature two batters hitting over .400 in Caycee Coleman (.600) and Kylee McKinney (.429). Coleman never made an out in the series against the Golden Suns, holding an on-base percentage of 1.000. Sarah Dornelas is the ace of the Riverhawks staff. Dornelas pitched 3.2 innings, while giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits with two strikeouts in her first start of the season.

Game 3 vs. Arkansas-Monticello (Saturday, Feb. 18 - 10 a.m.)
The Cotton Blossoms roll into Friday's action with an overall record of 1-1. UAM lost to Missouri Western (1-0), while defeating Rockhurst (6-2) in the OBU/MSU Classic. The Cotton Blossoms are led by senior Jennifer Hickman. The Bastrop, La. native is filling up the stat sheet, batting .667 with one home run, while owning a 1.333 slugging percentage. UAM's pitching staff is led by Kayla Jackson and Katie Slaughter. Jackson lost her first start of the season against Missouri Western, giving up one earned run while striking out six. Slaughter was the winning pitcher against Rockhurst, striking out 11 batters.

Game 4 vs. Cameron (Saturday, Feb. 18 - 2 p.m.)
Cameron makes the drive from Lawton, Okla., as a  seasoned ball club. The Aggies hold a record of 5-2, after traveling to Las Vegas, Nev. for the Desert Stinger. In the seven games Cameron has played, junior Sonia Fouch is batting .467 with two home runs and eight runs batted in. Cheyenne Brown has been busy on the mound thus far in the season, holding a 4-1 record and a 3.09 ERA. Brown has struck out 17 batters in 32.0 innings of work.

Game 5 vs. Central Oklahoma
(Sunday, Feb. 19 - 2 p.m.)
The Bronchos will be looking for their first victory in Durant, possessing an 0-2 record after being swept by No. 16 Angelo State on Feb. 11 (14-6, 8-1) in San Angelo, Texas. Central Oklahoma features four hitters batting .333, and have hit two homeruns as a team.

Game 6 vs. Southeastern Oklahoma State (Sunday, Feb. 19 - 4 p.m.)
Southeastern Oklahoma State comes into its tournament with a 5-4 record on the season. Three of the Savage Storm's losses have came by a total of eight runs. Sam Vrska has been the thunder in the heart of SEOSU's order. Vrska is batting .333 with two home runs and seven runs batted in.  Audra Rhudy has had mixed results in the circle thus far in the season. Rhudy holds a 3-3 record with a 3.00 ERA, striking out 20 batters.
