WEATHERFORD, Okla.- The Newman softball team will look for its first victories of the season on Tuesday, when they travel to Weatherford, Okla. to take on the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. on the campus of SWOSU.
The Jets started the season on the wrong foot in the South Central Shootout, losing all three of its games. Wet weather in the Durant, Okla. area cancelled the other three games scheduled. Katie Traffas has been the catalyst for the Newman offense early on this season. The junior from Medicine Lodge is batting .375 (3-8) with one home run and two RBI's. Freshman Sarah Balderas is batting .300 (3-10) in the first three games of her collegiate career. Senior Stephanie Smolsky has paced the Jet pitching staff, holding a 4.50 ERA, allowing one earned run in two innings pitched this season.
SWOSU enters Tuesday's doubleheader with a record of 4-1, and a 2-0 record at home. The Bulldogs only lost came in a 6-5 defeat to Heartland Conference foe Oklahoma Panhandle State.
