Softball Swept By SWOSU, 4-2, 7-5

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WEATHERFORD, Okla.- The Newman softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games on the road Tuesday at Southwestern Oklahoma State, The Jets dropped the first game 4-2 before dropping a 7-5 decision to the Bulldogs in the finale.

Game 1 - Southwestern Oklahoma State 4, Newman 2
Newman (0-4) started off on the right track in Tuesday's doubleheader, striking in the first inning against Southwestern Oklahoma State (5-1). Kaitlyn Pineda and Steph Harshberger both reached first base by way of SWOSU starter Katrina Johnson in the top of the first. Freshman Sarah Balderas loaded the bases with a single. A Brianna Hallacy walk plated Pineda to give Newman a 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs tied the game in the bottom of the second, 1-1,  when Kori Oord stole home on a throw down to second base, trying to catch Kristen Shawver. SWOSU took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth by way of an Audra Chambless RBI single. The Jets tried to rally in the top of the sixth, when Balderas reached base on a walk, and advanced to second on a passed ball. A Sarah Fipps single scored Balderas to tie the game at 2-2.

The Bulldogs opened the gap in the bottom of the frame, using two RBI singles to widen the margin to 4-2. Johnson retired the next three Jets in the top of the seventh to preserve the 4-2 victory.

Game 2:
SWOSU (6-1) jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first, when a Kori Oord homerun drove in three runs. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 4-0 in the next frame on a Johnna Smith RBI single.

Newman (0-5) started to scrap back in the top of the fourth, when Brianna Hallacy led off the half inning with a triple. A Katie Traffas sacrifice fly to right field cut the lead to 4-1. SWOSU gained its run back in the bottom of the frame, when a Smith single drove in another Bulldog. Steph Harshberger's RBI single drove in Erin Carney in the top of the fifth to trim the deficit to 5-2.

After holding the Bulldogs in the bottom of the fifth, Newman used the top of the sixth for making up ground. Following a Hallacy single to lead off the inning, freshman Kelsey Jones hit her first collegiate home run to get to within 5-4. SWOSU closed the door in the bottom of the bottom of the frame, scoring two runs to race to a 7-4 win.
