Rattlers Sweep Jets in Finale, 4-1

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Four errors led to four runs as the Newman baseball team dropped its third-straight game in a 4-1 decision to No. 4 St. Mary's Sunday afternoon at Wolff Stadium in San Antonio, Texas. Jacob Furr surrendered just two hits in his first start of the season.

St. Mary's (3-0, 3-0 Heartland) struck first, taking advantage of two Newman (0-3, 0-3 Heartland) errors to plate the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning. A pitchers duel ensued, as the two teams combined for just two hits over the next five innings, and the Rattlers held a 1-0 advantage heading into the sixth inning.

Corey Cowan doubled to left to open Sunday's seventh inning, and forced St. Mary's to pull starter Skye Severns in favor of Kyle Bumpas. Cowan advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Shanan Engroff, who was pinch hitting for Drew House, and Jerrod Flax cashed Cowan in with an RBI single up the middle. After seven innings, the Jets found themselves tied at 1-1 with the fourth-ranked team in the nation.

That tie was short-lived. St. Mary's tagged Newman reliever Ashton Hoffman for three runs on two hits and a Jet error, and took the 4-1 lead it went on to win by.

Starter Jacob Furr did his part to keep the nationally-ranked Rattler offense at bay in Sunday's finale. The sophomore allowed just two runs (one earned) on to hits with two strikeouts and three walks in five innings of work. Senior Corey Cowan was productive at the plate, finishing with a 1-for-2 outing with a run, a walk, and a strikeout.

St. Mary's' reliever Kyle Bumpas picked up his first win of the season, allowing just one hit in 1.2 innings of relief work.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 0-3 on the season, and 0-3 in Heartland Conference play. The road doesn't get any easier for the Jets, who will return to Texas next weekend for a three-game series at St. Edward's in Austin.
