Softball Hosts SWOSU For Doubleheader on Tuesday

WICHITA- The Newman softball team returns to the diamond on Tuesday, when Southwestern Oklahoma State travels to Wichita for a non-conference showdown. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Newman Softball Park. The Bulldogs stole two games from Newman on Feb. 21, defeating the Jets 4-2 and 7-4 in Weatherford, Okla.

Newman (2-11, 0-0 Heartland) has shown flashes of improvement over the past two weeks, winning two of its last six games. Since coming back from injury, junior Erin Monday has ignited a spark in the middle of the Jets' lineup. Monday is batting .417 in her last five games, boasting a .533 on-base percentage. Briana Hallacy and Sarah Fipps have eclipsed the .300 mark thus far in the season, batting .314 and .308, respectively. Hallacy is leading Newman with eight RBI's, and is tied for the team-lead with two home runs. Fipps has been steady on the bump for the Jets, striking out 31 batters en route to a 4.93 ERA.

Southwestern Oklahoma (17-6, 6-2 Great American) travel to Wichita winners of four of its last five games. The Bulldogs feature a stacked offensive attack with seven players batting over .300. Johnna Smith has logged a team-high 32 hits, while Kori Oord and Sara Harwell are tied with a team-high five home runs. As a team, SWOSU has clubbed 17 home runs and scored 124 runs. Katrina Johnson and Katie Raines have paced the Bulldogs' pitching staff, striking out 87 opponents in a combined 22 appearances. Johnson and Raines own 1.62 and 1.91 ERA's on the season.
