Box Score 2 WICHITA- The Newman softball team was swept in a doubleheader at home on Tuesday, losing 7-5 and 11-3 against Southwestern Oklahoma State at Newman Softball Park.
Game 1:
The opening game of the doubleheader saw a pitcher's dual until the top of the sixth inning. Southwestern Oklahoma (18-6) led off the frame with two consecutive singles before Newman (2-12) retired its first Bulldog. Kristina Davis' single drove in two runs, and a Sara Harwell home run tacked on three more runs to give the Bulldogs a 5-0 lead.
The Jets responded in the bottom half of the inning when Steph Harshberger led off with a single, and advanced to second on a
Briana Hallacy walk.
Katie Traffas walked to put Hallacy and Harshberger in scoring position.
Peyton Riedel reached base by way of a fielder's choice to score Harshberger. Two SWOSU errors resulted in four more Newman runs to tie the ball game at 5-5.
The Bulldogs struck back in the seventh with two runs on three hits, and two Jet errors gave SWOSU 7-5 lead. Katie Raines shut the door on a Newman comeback to preserve a 7-5 victory.
Harshberger and
Sarah Stutts recorded the only hits for the Jets, and
Sarah Fipps threw her fifth complete game of the season, striking out two batters.
Game 2:
Southwestern Oklahoma State (19-6) started the finale in the right direction, blasting a home run off of
Kelsey Jones in the top of the first. Newman (2-13) tied the game in the bottom of the second when
Katie Traffas scored on a
Peyton Riedel RBI single.
The Bulldogs gave themselves some cushion in the next two innings, when they plated five runs on six hits to gain a 6-1 advantage.
The Jets chipped back in the fourth when
Katie Traffas singled, following a
Briana Hallacy line-out. Traffas stole second in
Peyton Riedel's at-bat, and advanced to third on a passed ball.
Kaitlyn Padilla's single through the left side scored Traffas to trim the lead to 6-2. SWOSU plated another run a half an inning later, before the Jets made one last ditch effort to get back in the game. Erin Carney led off the frame with a single, and advanced to second on
Stephanie Smolsky's single through the left side. Carney advanced to third after
Sarah Fipps reached base safely on a fielder's choice. A
Briana Hallacy ground out plated Carney to cut the deficit to 7-2.
The Bulldogs put the game out of reach in the seventh when they scored four runs on four hits, and capitalized on two Newman errors en route to the 11-3 win. Smolsky led the Jet offense, batting 2-for-2, and also reached base on a walk.
Kaitlyn Padilla went 2-for-3 in the game, and drove in a run.
Kelsey Jones (1-4) took the loss for Newman, pitching 2.1 innings, and gave up five runs (five earned) on five hits. Jones recorded one strikeout during her outing.
The Jets return to the diamond on Friday, when they travel to Odessa, Texas for a weekend series against Texas-Permian Basin. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
