Box Score ODESSA, Texas- The Newman softball team lost the decisive Game 3, 5-0 at Texas-Permian Basin on Saturday in its opening weekend of Heartland Conference play.
Texas-Permian Basin (9-18, 2-1 Heartland Conference) jumped out to a quick start in the first inning, scoring the games' first run in the top of the first on an RBI single to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Newman (3-16, 1-2 Heartland) only recorded two hits through four innings, while UTPB plated four more runs in the bottom half of the inning on two hits, and took a decisive 5-0 lead. The Jets were only able to muster one more hit in the sixth inning, while Destinee Valero shut Newman down for a second time in three games, and the Falcons flew to the 5-0 victory.
Sarah Fipps went the distance in the lost, giving up five runs on ten hits, and struck out three Falcons.
Stephanie Harshberger led the Newman offense, batting 2-for-3 on the afternoon.
The Jets return to the diamond on Wednesday, when William Jewell comes to town for a double header at Newman Softball Park. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
