Softball Heads To Austin To Face St. Ed's on Friday

AUSTIN, Texas- The Newman softball team will look to get back in the Heartland Conference hunt on Friday, when they travel to Austin, Texas for a three-game series with the Hilltoppers of St. Edward's. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Diane Daniels Field.

The Jets come into the series with an overall record of 3-18, and a 1-5 mark in Heartland Conference play. Erin Monday has had a huge impact since coming back from injury on March 16 against Texas-Permian Basin. Monday is batting .433 in 30 at-bats, with three doubles.The Glenpool, Okla. native capped off last weekend's series at A&M International with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate.

Sophomore Sarah Fipps has taken huge strides since her opening campaign as a Jet. The Noble, Okla. product has dropped her ERA from 5.72 as a freshman, to a 4.38 ERA thus far in her sophomore campaign. Fipps has fanned 45 opponents in 91.0 innings pitched.

The Hilltoppers return to Austin following a six-game road trip. St. Edward's holds a 21-15 record overall, and leads the Heartland Conference with a 5-1 mark. The Hilltoppers feature an offensive lineup with five batters hitting over .300. Marissa Thome leads St. Edward's with a .405 batting average and four triples of the teams' eight triples on the season. Sara DeBrow and Paige Sandahl have anchored the pitching staff thus far for St. Ed's. DeBrow leads Cat Osterman's staff with a 1.73 ERA in 85.0 innings pitched. Sandahl holds a 3.27 ERA in 19 appearances, and leads the team with 76 strikeouts.
