Baseball Aims For Fifth Straight At Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan.- The Newman baseball team steps out of Heartland Conference play on Tuesday, traveling to Topeka, Kan. to take on the Washburn Ichabods. The Jets are looking for their fifth-straight victory. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Falley Field.

Newman flies into Tuesday's game with an overall record of 11-5, and a 10-5 mark in Heartland Conference play. The Jets defeated Central Oklahoma, 18-11 on Feb. 21 in its only other non-conference game. Newman is coming off a sweep of Texas-Permian Basin, scoring 37 runs in three games. David Longmore has been the leader of the Newman offense, batting .362 with four extra base hits and 11 runs batted in. Newman features nine players batting over .250 on the season. Newman's starting pitching staff (Droge, Burkhardt, Furr) possesses a 3.20 ERA. Anthony Gonzales and Gage Daniels have anchored the bullpen, combining for a 1.83 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 20.3 innings pitched.

Washburn comes into Tuesday's game with a 2-3 record, and a 0-1 mark at Falley Field. The Ichabads boast four players hitting over .333, led by Tyler Bean and John Calhoun's .389 averages.  Bean leads the team with two home runs, and a .722 slugging percentage. Bean is also one of the top pitchers for the Ichabods, scattering seven hits, one run (one earned) while striking out three batters in his only start.
